Playa de las Americas is a large, very popular holiday resort, located on the south-west coast of the sunny isle of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, which are located very favourably, off the coast of Morocco, North Africa.
Tenerife is part of Spain, along with the other Canary Isles, viz Gran Canaria, Lanzarote, Fuerteventura, La Palma, El Hierro and Gomera. Indeed, Tenerife is the biggest .. and busiest.... of the holiday islands of the Canaries and extremely popular with British tourists, in particular.
The Canary Islands are highly favoured tourist destinations because they have such a beautiful climate, with almost year-round warmth.
Therefore, they are busy even in winter, when many Mediterranean resorts have closed down for the season.
In fact, many of those working in the holiday trade around the Mediterranean and further north in Europe, holiday themselves in the Canaries during the winter months.
You'll find that Christmas /New Year is a very busy time of year in the Canary Isles!!
Playa de las Americas is the largest and busiest tourist resort in Tenerife, having grown from virtually nothing in the early Sixties.
Up until the late Fifties, the adjoining resort of Los Cristianos, just to the south of Playa de las Americas, was a sleepy fishing village. Since then, it has grown into a large modern resort.
A few of the old harbour-side buildings of Los Cristianos remain, but have now become surrounded on all sides by the burgeoning, modern tourist resorts of Los Cristianos, Playa de las Americas and Fanabe Beach, just to the north of the latter. These three areas now virtually form one holiday resort, stretching for miles along the coast.
The natural sand is dark and of volcanic origin. However, a great deal of lighter, golden sands have been imported from the Sahara desert, to create man-made beaches.
The growth of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos, has been truly phenomenal since the Sixties. It has really boomed!
There are now thousands of bars, restaurants, cafes, self-catering apartments and hotels of all grades....to suit all pockets and tastes!!
In recent years, there has been a great expansion northwards of Playa de las Americas, in the Fanabe Beach and Costa Adeje areas. A new promenade was built here a few years ago, which is now backed by a multitude of restaurants and bars; with superb 4 and 5 star hotels with ample grounds, just inland of them!
Playa de las Americas caters largely for those who love a lively holiday, so there are plenty of bars playing almost non-stop music to attract younger visitors.
This is especially so in the town centre, where you will find the Starco Commercial Centre and the Veronicas Complex, both with their many noisy bars and discos.
However, there are also many high quality hotels with very peaceful palm-filled grounds for those who enjoy a much quieter time!
One such area is on the corner of the coast between Los Cristianos and Playa de las Americas, in the Arona Municipio.
This is a flat area of coast-line; much flatter than some parts of Playa de las Americas further north. Therefore it is suitable for older people, those with walking difficulties and disabled people ... especially wheel-chair users.
However, it is also popular with young families, because there are some excellent, good quality, family hotels and stylish, very well-designed self-catering complexes in this quiet, classy area.
The self-catering includes the five really nice architecturally-styled Parque Santiago complexes, which have beautiful grounds and lovely swimming pool areas.
Surrounding them, you will also find a range of reputable 3 star hotels and several extremely good 4 star hotels like the Conquistador and Tenerife Princess.
There is also the classy 5 Star Mediterranean Palace with its striking blue balconies, visible from a distance.
There are nice good quality shops, bars and restaurants in this uncrowded, quiet upmarket area, as well, and it is an easy level walk around the corner to the beaches and flat promenade of Los Cristianos, with its huge choice of bars and restaurants.
We have stayed two or three times in this pleasant, quiet area of Playa de las Americas and have always been pleased with our choice of location.
It is within easy reach of both the centre of Playa de las Americas and Los Cristianos. We can recommend it.
